The Psychiatric Counter-Narrative

The United States stands on every global stage and preaches human rights, liberty, and dignity, and it is a complete fraud. For behind the flag-waving speeches and the hollow sermons about freedom, this country runs a 24/7 slaughterhouse of innocent, good people through the tyrannical quackery called psychiatry. It does not need barbed wire or firing squads. It has white coats, locked wards, and a prescription pad.

Psychiatry is not medicine. It is an empire of invention. Its high priests, psychiatrists, are demonic criminals in clinical drag who literally make everything up. They conjure disorders in textbooks, fabricate authority in journal articles, and forge reality in patient charts, all with no rational scientific evidence to back up a single claim they insist is medical science. There is no blood test, no brain scan, no lesion, no biomarker. There is only language, twisted and weaponized.

And the trick that makes the whole racket work is as evil as it is clever. If you tell them their interventions are absurd, destructive, and unwanted, if you refuse to be railroaded into a mental hospital and to swallow their toxic arsenal of psychiatric drugs that poison the brain, sicken the body, and crush the spirit, they write down your resistance as proof that you are sick. Your sanity, your clarity, your natural horror at being kidnapped by the state becomes a symptom. The assertion that it is absurd to be dealt with in this way is logged as lack of insight, as illness itself. It is a perfect, sealed, circular trap built entirely on clever, tricky plays on words, not science.

That is why this tyranny is so easy for them to push. The victim is never allowed to be a credible witness to his own destruction.

And when targeted people across the USA do resist this absurd tyranny, what happens is not care, it is state violence. They are kidnapped from their homes and streets, beaten into submission, chemically assaulted with forced injections, incarcerated in psychiatric jails called hospitals, and then dragged into swift, fixed, kangaroo court proceedings.

There, before lazy, undereducated judges who get a free ride in life for rubber-stamping the destruction of human beings, lives are ended on a conveyor belt. No real hearing, no real defense, no real law. A few minutes of sham theater, a signature, and another innocent person is legally stripped of his freedom, his rights, and his future. Case after case, day after day, in every county in America.

This is the real human rights record of the United States. Not the speeches. The daily, methodical railroading of sane people by a pseudo-science that rules by word games and a court system that exists to legitimize it.

Human Beings Were Born to Flourish, Not Be Managed by Psychiatry There is something fundamentally wrong with a society that can take a human being experiencing emotional turmoil, despair, confusion, trauma, or difficulty navigating life and transform that person into a psychiatric patient whose future becomes increasingly defined by diagnoses, prescriptions, appointments, institutional authority, and diminished expectations. Psychiatry can become not merely something a person encounters during a difficult period, but an identity imposed upon that person and a system from which genuine escape becomes extraordinarily difficult. I reject the assumption that this represents an acceptable model of human care. I reject the idea that somebody who falls into, or is pushed into, the psychiatric system should spend years or decades being "managed" rather than being encouraged to reclaim a full human existence. A person should not be reduced to remaining stable enough to survive quietly somewhere on the outskirts of society while others congratulate themselves on a supposedly successful outcome. **Human life is meant to flourish, not merely subsist.** Once someone acquires a psychiatric label, there is a grave danger that everything about that person's existence begins to be interpreted through it. Ambition can be recast as unrealistic thinking. Anger can become pathology. Disagreement can become lack of insight. Suffering can become a diagnosis. Resistance to psychiatric authority can itself be interpreted through a psychiatric framework. Eventually, the living, thinking, aspiring individual risks disappearing behind an expanding vocabulary of labels supposedly explaining who that person is. Meanwhile, the ordinary architecture of human life can collapse: education, employment, relationships, independence, confidence, financial security, purpose and the expectation of a meaningful future. What remains can be a grotesquely diminished existence in which merely staying alive, staying quiet and staying within the system becomes the new definition of success. **I refuse to call that success.** My objection therefore goes considerably further than calling for another round of psychiatric reform. I question the legitimacy of psychiatry's extraordinary authority to classify human thought, emotion and behavior and then exercise enormous influence over the lives of the people it classifies. Human suffering is unquestionably real. Despair is real. Grief, loneliness, trauma, fear, confusion, unusual experiences and emotional catastrophe are real. But acknowledging human suffering does not require transforming the suffering human being into a psychiatric object. There is an enormous moral distinction between **helping another human being through suffering** and **placing that human being under a system devoted to diagnosis and psychiatric management**. Genuine help should begin with the human being, with dignity, liberty, circumstances, relationships, physical well-being, aspirations and the person's own understanding of what has happened. It should never begin with the assumption that institutional authority possesses ownership over the meaning of another person's experience. And that brings us to the question psychiatry and society desperately need to confront: **What kind of life do we believe a suffering human being deserves?** Is merely remaining alive sufficient? Is living indefinitely on disability, socially marginalized and stripped of meaningful ambition somehow a satisfactory destination simply because the person has been declared psychiatrically ill? That is an appallingly impoverished vision of human possibility. There is also a staggering imbalance of expectations. The professionals determining what constitutes an "adequate" existence for another person generally pursue considerably more for themselves: careers, financial security, comfortable homes, relationships, intellectual development, achievement, recreation and meaningful futures. Why should drastically diminished expectations suddenly become acceptable when the life under consideration belongs to somebody carrying a psychiatric diagnosis? **What would be considered an intolerably diminished existence for the professional must never become "good enough" for the patient.** I do not believe the answer is simply kinder psychiatric management. I believe we must be courageous enough to question whether human suffering should be governed by psychiatry at all. We need approaches centered upon voluntary assistance, human dignity, personal liberty, meaningful relationships, physical health, economic opportunity, community, compassion and the conviction that suffering does not erase personhood. A frightened, traumatized, confused or despairing individual remains a human being. That person's voice matters. Liberty matters. Aspirations matter. The opportunity to rebuild matters. Most importantly, **the future still matters.** Human beings do not exist merely to survive from appointment to appointment, prescription to prescription, diagnosis to diagnosis, or disability check to disability check. They are capable of creation, discovery, relationships, learning, contribution, independence, laughter, purpose and hope. No institution should be permitted to transform mere biological survival into the highest imaginable standard of recovery. We must demand something greater than subsistence. We must defend the radical idea that even after profound suffering, life can once again belong to the person living it. **Human beings were not born to spend their lives on the fringes of existence. They were born with the possibility of flourishing. And anything that systematically lowers that horizon deserves not our obedience, but our challenge. 

 The United States is not operating a free market. It is operating the biggest slave galley of its kind in world history, only the oars have been replaced by time clocks, headsets, cash registers, and warehouse scanners. Most jobs are so low paying and so demeaning that the people in them cannot actually subsist, not with today's skyrocketing inflation. The paycheck does not cover rent, food, medicine, and transport in the same month. It was never meant to. It is designed to keep the rower rowing, exhausted, hungry, and grateful for the oar. And yet the employees, some of whom come to work straight from the streets or from shelters or from crowded tenement rooms, are scared to death to criticize anything. They know the penalty. A word out of place, a complaint about wages or safety or dignity, and the word of mouth lifetime blacklist begins. It is informal, unwritten, and total. Suddenly you cannot get hired anywhere in the country. If the protest is too loud, the punishment escalates. You are railroaded into the highly destructive psychiatric system. You are hit with toxic drugging and other literally damaging interventions based on totally fabricated allegations of disordered thinking and behavioral issues. The allegations do not need to be true. The psychiatrists do not care that it is all made up, because that is how they operate anyway. The label becomes the weapon, and the drugs become the chains. The management in these positions is generally intentionally made up of autocratic tyrants. Their job is not to lead, it is to maintain the status quo for the ultra wealthy and the highly overpaid CEOs who make far more money in a year relaxing on their yachts, at the golf clubs and swim clubs, than the entire workforce at their firms can earn in a lifetime. Those at the top could not actually run the firms for an hour. They do not know how the work is done. Those who do know how to do it best are ridiculed and thrown out into the streets. The same brutal cutoff operates at the very top of the so-called meritocracy, in the lucrative sides of law and medicine, where nepotism runs rampant. In law, the road to the high-paid corporate firms, the federal clerkships, the rainmaker partnerships, is walled off. It is not about brilliance or work ethic. It is about whose son you are, whose summer house you visited, which partner made a call for you. The brilliant newcomer without a family name is steered into document review sweatshops, traffic court mills, and endless debt-financed contract gigs. He is told he is not a good fit, not polished enough, not connected enough, while the mediocre legacy hire is ushered inside. In medicine, the same gate is slammed shut. The lucrative specialties, the surgical residencies, the prestigious hospital privileges, the private practices that actually allow a doctor to pay off loans and live, are parceled out through nepotism. Residency match favors the insiders, research slots go to the children of department chairs, referrals flow through country club networks. The outsider, even with top scores and relentless motivation, is pushed toward the grinding, low-paid, high-liability primary care treadmill, or is forced out entirely with hundreds of thousands in debt and a destroyed transcript. In both professions the system pretends to be an open competition. In reality it brutally cuts newcomers before they can ever get started, because an open competition would expose how replaceable the heirs at the top really are. So there is absolutely no freedom for most Americans from birth to death. There are no legitimate opportunities to compete and get ahead because people are cut out before they can begin. What we are referring to is highly educated, brilliant and motivated people who had it in them to make the professions, business and politics better in the USA. Instead they are humiliated, degraded, beaten by the police and drugged into oblivion by the psychiatrists to keep them from ever getting ahead, as they spend their tormented and severely shortened lives navigating daily survival rituals in the American slave ship they were born into. Rising prices and debts of a nature only the very wealthy can navigate well are the final nails on their coffins.
